Beginning in 2012, a three phase project called “Connecting Kids with Nature” took place to help connect kids with nature, to showcase and inspire local artists, and to explore the potential of a Nature Centre in Smithers.
The first phase, Fine Art of Nature was offered in May 2012. A 4-week long art and nature show at Smithers Art Gallery featured local artists and workshop participants that contributed art and nature installations. The Fine Art of Nature was a huge success! All the workshops were filled, extra workshops were scheduled, and the Smithers Art Gallery received over 2,000 visitors. This nature show was sponsored by the Art Gallery and the main organizers were Clare Aries and Rosamund Pojar.
The second phase, called Out of the Box, ran throughout the summer and fall and included outdoor activities and field trips for children aged 4-12 in both Smithers and outlying communities. The BVN assisted by obtaining funding and providing trip leaders. The program was really well received, with good turnouts.
