Amphibian Monitoring Project

Northwest British Columbia Reptile and Amphibian Monitoring Program (NWBC RAMP), is a collective of volunteers in the northwest quadrat of British Columbia, monitoring for the presence and activities of garter snakes and amphibians.

Volunteers include members of the Bulkley Valley Naturalists, Skeena Valley Naturalists (weena@telus.net)  in Terrace and Kitimat Naturalists (mac2aa@citywest.ca), as well as students in the Applied Coastal Ecology Program at Northwest Community College, wilderness resorts, large ranches and farms, professional foresters, biologists, and technicians, and a wide range of individuals and families with a passion for the natural world.  In 2012, there were 50 groups monitoring for NWBC RAMP, in a region stretching from Glenora, on the Stikine River to Fort St. James in the interior, including communities along Highway 16 and extending out to the north coast at Kitimat, Prince Rupert and Kitsault.

Volunteers monitor the presence of species through permanent cover boards and visual surveys, as well as by recording incidental sightings.  The data is assisting Provincial Ministries to identify ranges of species, changes over time to presence of species, and identification of key habitat features such as breeding ponds and hibernacula.  Another key aspect to the program is the increase in public awareness about amphibians and reptiles, through signage, school visits, public talks, and the work of volunteers in the communities.  NWBC RAMP is very popular with the public, and there is a waiting list of potential volunteers wanting to join the program.
