The Smithers Community Forest was established in 1988. The Bulkley Valley Naturalists have a representative on the Smithers Community Forest Committee, participate in the design and upkeep of a self-guided Nature Trail, and produce educational brochures. The Smithers Community Forest Interpretive Trail is ideal for families to explore different ecological habitats
Since 2008, the Bulkley Valley Naturalists have been an integral part of the annual maintenance and upkeep for the Interpretive Trail system. Members have replaced old and broken boardwalks, worked with BC Trails and Recreation Sites to install new posts for all of the interpretive points, and prepared a new sign and map of the Nature Trail that will be installed at the lower parking lot in 2013. A life ring has been installed at the dipping dock as well as a warning sign about its instability. These efforts have greatly improved the Interpretive Trail, and it is ready for use again.
The Smithers Community Forest Interpretive Trail brochures were designed by the Bulkley Valley Naturalists. Two brochures are available that describe the natural features of the trails. Copies of the brochures may be obtained from the Bulkley District Forestry Office or by contacting us.
