Both the Smithers and Houston NatureKids have an active programme of events for this year. Activities take place from 10am to Noon on intermittent Saturdays.

April 26 Earth Day Party at the Bulkley River Recreation site

Join Smithers NatureKids for a hike to the Bulkley River and explore springtime in the north. Scavenger hunt, snacks and activities galore.

Meet at 9:30 am at the Nature Centre to carpool.

10 am – 12 pm, Dress for the weather and for hiking (layers and hiking shoes).
May 24 “How to Bird” Walk

BirdBlitz – Duck Pond – Join in on Houston’s Annual Birdblitz with a guided “How to bird” walk around the Duck Pond in Houston.

Meet at Houston Secondary School parking lot. Bring binoculars if you have them (we will have some available)

Willowvale Wetland walk – see Smithers NatureKids event
July 26 “Buckets, Berries and Bears Oh My”

Learn how to identify and use saskatoon berries and how to stay safe when sharing your harvest with the bears.

10am – 12pm

Meet at the Nature Centre for some learning on bears and then walk Northside Trails to pick saskatoons and learn about bear safety. Bring a berry bucket for your harvest.
Aug 30 – Buck Creek Falls Adventure

Hike us for a fuller day, easy/intermediate trail to Buck Creek Falls and discover life along Buck creek.

10-1 – Note: This will be longer than normal explorer days. Don’t forget to bring lunch, water and snacks.

Meet at the Nature Centre at 10:00 to carpool (The falls are 30 km out of town so we will go together).

Dress for the weather. Bring lunch water and snacks. Easy to intermediate hike. Not suitable for strollers or people with mobility constraints (although we will go slow and it is not far so we will walk to the slowest person).
Sept 27 – Salmon Celebration

Fulton River Sockeye Salmon Run – Visit the world’s largest man-made spawning channel to witness the fall migration of thousands of spawning sockeye salmon and learn about their amazing journey from Fulton river, to the ocean and back again.

Meet at the Nature Centre 10 to carpool

10 – 2 (Spawning channels are a 45 minute drive away so this will be a day trip and we will carpool to save gas and carbon emissions)

Bring lunch, snacks and water, dress for the weather.

This is an easy, short walk so strollers and folks with mobility issues are welcome to join us.
